Endeavour to... and try -ing


Try to do = endeavour to exercise, make an effort to practice:

I was very tired. I tried to keep my eyes open but I couldn't.

� Please try to be quiet when yous come habitation. Everyone volition be asleep.

Effort also ways 'do something as an experiment or examination'. For example:

� These cakes are delicious. You must try one. (= yous must have one to see if you like it)

If try (with this pregnant) is followed by a verb, we say try - ing :

Something needs doing = something needs to exist washed:

� The batteries in the radio need changing . (= they need to be changed)

� Practise yous call up my jacket needs cleaning ? (=needs to be cleaned)

� It'south a difficult trouble. It needs thinking near very carefully. (= information technology needs to be thought about)

You can say 'assist to exercise ' or 'help do' (infinitive with or without to ):

� Everybody helped to clean upward after the party, or Everybody helped clean upward...

� Can you assist me to move this tabular array? or Can you assistance me move ...

There is also an expression 'can't/couldn't help do ing something'.

'I tin't help doing something' = I can't stop myself from doing information technology:

� I don't like him simply he has a lot of bug. I tin't assistance feeling sorry for him.

� She tried to be serious but she couldn't aid laughing . (= she couldn't finish herself from laughing)

� I'chiliad sorry I'thousand so nervous. I can't aid it. (= I tin can't help being nervous)


Put the verb into the correct form, -ing or to.
